Om Michael
I studied at The Institute of Education, University College London, the number 1 ranked university in the world for education (QS World University Ranking). Where I qualified as Primary School Teacher in 2004 and returned in 2014 to complete an MA in Literacy Learning and Literacy Difficulties.
I chose to study there as I had a deep desire to learn from the best and in turn become the best that I could be. My studies were rigorous, intense and inspiring. Throughout my teaching career, which has spanned both mainstream and special educational schools my teaching was consistently graded as ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’. I have held several management positions including Head of Early Years, Assistant Head and have mentored many student and first year teachers. However, I had known from my first year of teaching that supporting pupils with the early literacy skills was clearly my passion and what I most enjoyed teaching.
Therefore, since 2013 I have actively sought roles such as Literacy Interventions Teacher that enabled me to completely focus on supporting students with early literacy skills (phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation). This year I decided that I would begin to offer my skills online. I have been teaching online since April 2021 and truly believe that I have developed a fantastic early reading skills program that develops targeted reading skills to ensure progression is fun and engaging for the student.

Is your child finding the acquisition of early reading skills, in particular phonics, challenging? Does s/he struggle to match the correct sounds to letters, or become frustrated when attempting to blend sounds to read words or when segmenting sounds to spell words? Conversely you may feel that your child is acquiring the necessary skills but requires more of a challenge in the form of using these skills. If so, I can help! Teaching early reading skills is my passion. I have been highly successful in helping students to become confident readers for over 15 years (in the UK and Sweden) and I love it! I truly believe that it is my passion, expertise and love of teaching this subject that has enabled me to help so many children become successful readers.
Theoretical knowledge underpins my practice along with experience of supporting a wide range of pupils such as those with special educational needs, English as an additional language and pupils working above expectations for their age. This gives me a great deal of confidence regarding my ability to successfully support all students regardless of the challenges they may be facing.
My approach to teaching is to firstly assess pupils current knowledge, ascertain what particular aspects of reading they may be finding challenging and use this to develop an individual plan for progression. I feel that it is important to have fun and celebrate all successes along the journey, raising pupils self-esteem and developing a positive attitude for reading. I am also adept at identifying and ameliorating potential barriers to learning.
I teach phonics:
• Learning letters sounds (all phases)
• Reading words with these sounds (blending)
• Spelling words with these sounds using the correct letter formation (segmenting)
• Reading and writing sentences using these words.

• Developing comprehension skills alongside reading (reading = word recognition + language comprehension)
