Om Jakob
I am not a linguist but a social scientist. Holding a PhD, my expertise encompasses political cultures in Western and Northern Europe as well as Latin America. My language journey has led me to publish in four distinct languages: English, German, Italian, and Spanish, all while operating within an intensely international environment.
My vantage point as a social scientist has fostered a deep interest in political cultures and effective learning methodologies. Reflecting upon my own experiences, I realized that after mastering the basics of grammar and vocabulary, it was immersion in real conversations that truly advanced my language proficiency. This approach echoes Michael Long's theory, which champions the role of conversation in language acquisition.
In recent years, I've merged my linguistic passion with community service, volunteering to help refugees learn German. As a university lecturer, I've had the privilege of interacting with international students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Each of these experiences has reaffirmed my belief in the value of learning through conversation.
I am committed to facilitating my students' linguistic journey. If diving into a real German conversation seems intimidating, I will try to make the experience as painless as possible. Don't feel bad if you don't understand certain sentences or if you make mistakes. It is especially the fear of a dialogue in another language that needs to be overcome first. It's important to remember that real conversation is not about catching every word, but about understanding the wider context and articulating your thoughts. I see my role as helping you to find both comfort and confidence in your conversational skills.

It's long been understood that we learn languages not just to speak them but to communicate effectively. While the early stages of learning focus heavily on grammar rules and vocabulary accumulation, as one progresses, the dynamics shift. The real-world application, nuance understanding, and language fluidity are primarily achieved through conversation. I am a big advocate of the Interaction Hypothesis as developed by Michael Hugh Long. This theory posits that language is acquired primarily through understanding messages, rather than conscious study. Conversations provide 'comprehensible input,' especially when tailored to the learner's current level.
In this sense I offer conversational courses according to your current level of German. Depending on your aims, I will prepare certain conversation topics. My course aims to improve:
- Enhanced Recall: Context-based learning through conversations makes it easier to remember vocabulary, grammar and phrases.
- Contextual Learning: Conversations expose learners to language in its natural habitat. They encounter colloquialisms, specific vocabulary depending on the topic, and cultural nuances that textbooks often overlook.
- Improved Pronunciation & Intonation: Regular conversations with native speakers or advanced learners can drastically improve accent, rhythm, and stress patterns.
- Boosted Confidence: Engaging in real conversations reduces fear of making mistakes, thus fostering a growth mindset.
