Om Albin
I'm a PhD student at Lund university in Sweden, doing research in the field of metrics and prosody, mainly through developing new digital tools. In my free time, I create YouTube videos that showcase Ancient Greek as both a living and a musical language, some of them having more than 30k views at the time of writing.
I'm also an active musician and conceptual artist, and if there's one thing I've learnt from the ancients, it's that speech is a type of music: μουσικὴ γάρ τις ἦν καὶ ἡ τῶν πολιτικῶν λόγων ἐπιστήμη τῷ ποσῷ διαλλάττουσα τῆς ἐν ᾠδῇ καὶ ὀργάνοις, οὐχὶ τῷ ποιῷ (Dionysius of Halicarnassus, De compositione verborum, 11, 12).

Learning dead languages doesn't have to be dry and theoretical! Through their inherent sound and music, texts can be transformed into something alive and engaging. I believe sound should come before sense—skip the endless glossary and cut to the quick, take the risk of nonsense and savour the language! The rest will catch up in time.
Practical rhythmical exercises always take a part in my lessons, whether my clapping, playing intruments or just scat singing. Only when the rhythm has been internalized and can be "heard" in one's inner ear, should one bother with the text!
