Om Alexander

Alexander was born in London, England and his solo career currently spans opera, oratorio, concert, television, musical theatre and
acting. Alexander’s professional career began early on at the age of 7 when he began his training as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral,
London. He later studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was supported by the Peter Moores Founda-
tion and Mario Lanza Foundation. He took further courses including the Eton Choral Course in London, the Ferrandou Summer
School with David Wilson Johnson and studied privately at the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto in Italy with Kiri Te Kanawa,
Frederica von Stade and Corradina Caporello, in Switzerland with Nicolai Gedda, in Italy with Susanna Rigacci and in Sweden with
tenor Sten Sjöstedt. He has also undertaken private study from eminent artists including Anne Howells, Geoffrey Shovelton, Nigel
Douglas, Martin Isepp, Rafael Rojas, Joseph Ward, Sir Thomas Allen, David Lloyd-Jones, Bruno Rigacci, Robin Stapleton and
Francesca Patané and received specialist coaching from artists such as Jean Mallandaine, Jim Holmes, Paul Griffiths, Chris Squires,
Adele Leigh, John Cameron and Dale Fundling.
On the opera stage, Alexander has a broad operatic experience across a range of repertoire. He has been fortunate to receive consis-
tent critical acclaim from the broadsheets and magazines since his professional debut as Peter Quint in Britten’s Turn of the Screw
which was described in Opera Magazine as a “triumph”. Recent career highlights include being engaged at the Gothenburg Opera as
Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia directed by David Radok and Captain Vere in Britten’s Billy Budd opposite Peter Mattei and
Clive Bayley, directed by Richard Jones and conducted by Jan Latham-Koenig; the roles of Armed Man and Priester Die Zauberflöte
under Daniel Harding at the Lucerne Festival; Don Ramiro La Cenerentola for Malmö Opera, which he later reprised under the baton
of Pier Giorgio Morandi at the National Finnish Opera. Also in Sweden he has taken the role of Magnus Gabriele in Foroni’s Cristina
Regina di Svezia under Tobias Ringborg and covered Metropolitan tenor Stuart Neill as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen for Opera På
Skäret. In the UK, roles include Count Danilo The Merry Widow (“..the Danilo of one’s dreams” Opera Magazine), Pedrillo, Il
Seraglio and Alfred Die Fledermaus for Scottish Opera; Le Nos, Pytor and Yarishkin Le Nos at the Royal Opera House; Trio, Trouble
In Tahiti (Bernstein) and Charlie, Mahagonny Songspeil (Weill) directed by John Fulljames for The Opera Group; Pierrot, Der Kaiser
von Atlantis (Ullmann) under Edward Gardner and the Hallé Orchestra which he reprised for Upfront Opera; Lupo with Hans Werner
Henze as conductor in Pollicino; Bajazet, Tamerlano; Hippolyte, Hippolyte et Aricie and Telemachus Il Ritorno d’UIisse in Patria for

Alexander’s specialisations include modern repertoire which has led to the creation of 10 roles in world premiere British
operas with leading composers and librettists. For Scottish Opera’s innovative Five:15: Gesualdo collaborating with crime novelist
Ian Rankin and composer Craig Armstrong; Dream Angus (Deazley) with novelist Alexander McCall Smith; Steve in Lyell Creswell’s
and Ron Butlin’s Money Man; Ghost in Paul Mealor and Peter Stollery’s 74 Degrees North; Vitya, The Letter (Maclaverty + Kho-
dosh). For The Opera Group: Faceless Suit, Walking Not Driving (Coker); Dean, Anything Money Can Buy (Bowler); Wilson Out of
the Ordinary (Bruce); For Yorke Trust Opera: Lord Nelson, The Sailor’s Tale (Bawden). Other roles include Ben The Telephone and
Prince Florian in the world premiere of The Magic Diamond conducted by John Owen-Edwards.
On the oratorio and concert platforms Alexander has performed around the world including the USA, Brazil (Manaus Opera
House), Japan and the West Indies. Having performed the majority of the oratorio repertoire around the UK’s cathedrals and concert
halls, notable performances includes Rinaldo (Brahms) with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden; the world premiere of
Joubert’s A Song for St Stephen, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Handel’s Messiah with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
under Simon Halsey; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Mozart’s Mass in Cmin under David Lloyd-Jones and L’Enfant du Christ at
the Bridgewater Hall under Kent Negano. Other concert highlights include performing Fauré’s Pie Jesu under Sir Georg Solti at the
Royal Festival Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra; Viennese Operetta with Wyn Davies and the Northern Sinfonia at The
Sage, Gateshead; a private performance for President Bush Snr at the White House, Washington; the Queen Mother’s 90th Birthday at
Horseguards Parade, London; and with Big Bird and the Muppets for Jim Henson’s Memorial Service. Other gala venue highlights
include the Royal Albert Hall, London and Berwaldhallen, Stockholm.
On the Musical Theatre platform Alexander had the title role of Peter Pan at the Royal Festival Hall, London choreographed
by Gillian Gregory and in 2012 the role of Anthony Candolino in the Broadway transfer of Masterclass starring Tyne Daly and direct-
ed by Stephen Wadsworth.
On television, Alexander has appeared in various guises in small acting roles in television series’ including Clocking Off, Brookside,
Coronation Street, North Square, At Home with the Braithwaites, Hollyoaks, Always and Everyone, and with Harry Secombe on
Highway (ITV). Commercially Alexander has toured the UK and Ireland’s largest venues, performing to capacity crowds of over
25,000 a night and over 250,000 in one month in venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Manchester Evening News Arena and the
O2 Millennium Dome, London, with artists including Beardyman, Alexandra Burke, Lee Ryan, Mystique and Beverley Knight. In
2022, Alexander performed to 4.5 million live on Sweden’s largest televised song competition, Melodifestivalen, with his concept,
TENORI which has been heard live around Europe for over 20 years.
On radio and recording, Alexander frequently performs with the BBC Concert Orchestra, most recently on BBC Radio 2 at
the Hackney Empire, London in A Tribute to Mario Lanza and a “A Look back to the good old days” both broadcast live. Alexander
has also been heard on BBC Radio 3, the World Service and Sveriges Radio, Sweden. Recording credits include the world premiere
of Bawden’s The Sailor’s Tale on the NMC label in which he created the role of Lord Nelson; a world premiere for Independent Ballet
Wales of Turner’s Bride of Flowers; the soundtrack of James Horner, Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas’s animated movie The
Land Before Time at Abbey Road Studios, London and the inaugural UK Häagen-Daas advert also at Abbey Road Studios, London.
Alexander is also featured on multiple Hyperion recordings.
