Om Maaru
Hello! My name is Maaru Harilo, and I am a current Master of Science student in Global Studies at Lund University in Sweden. I offer a native perspective on language learning, as I grew up in a bilingual home in Finland, speaking both Finnish and British English daily. Since I learned both languages in childhood, I possess an intuitive understanding of their nuances, idioms, and correct pronunciations.
In addition to being a native English and Finnish speaker, I am fluent in Spanish, which I learned during an exchange year in Chile. Since I went through the process of learning Spanish fluently, and I am currently studying the basics of Arabic, as well as learning Swedish and Italian, I know what it feels like to struggle with a new language, hit plateaus, and overcome the fear of speaking.
I am capable of conducting, explaining, and tutoring both English and Finnish in Spanish or Finnish. If your native language is either of these, this removes the frustration of the language as a barrier, allowing me to explain in a way you will easily understand. If your native language is something else, I am very comfortable in finding ways to communicate and teach, even without a common base language; it may even be an advantage!
My goal is to provide a fun, encouraging, and engaging environment where you feel confident making mistakes and accelerating your fluency. Whether you seek to master English or Finnish, I am excited to help you succeed!

I bring a strong background in language acquisition and an understanding of how to bridge different languages together. Having mastered multiple languages myself, as well as taught others, I know where students can get stuck. I have experience working with learners of various backgrounds, including those with learning difficulties, helping them overcome the fear of speaking and successfully achieve their goals, no matter the level.
My standard lessons are 60 minutes long, which allows the necessary amount of time to review, learn a new concept, and practice it through conversation. However, I am flexible and can offer 45-minute sessions for younger learners with shorter attention spans, or 90 or even 120-minute intensive sessions upon request.
My lessons are open to students of all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced speakers looking to polish their fluency. I have experience working with children of all ages. I make the lessons fun, game-based, and high-energy to keep them engaged. For teenagers, I can offer support for school, exam prep, or help in building confidence for future studies or preparing for an international exchange and so on. For university students, I offer tutoring with studies in English or Finnish as a foreign language. For adults of all ages, I offer conversational practice, preparation for travel, as well as tutoring to improve professional/business language skills. I will tailor the lessons based on your goals and ensure that you meet them.
No matter your age or current level, I will create a supportive, stress-free environment where you can learn at your own pace!
