I have known Dr. Kristjansson since 2000, when he worked for me while I was Director of Engineering at an opto-electronic materials and device startup company called Nova Crystals in San Jose, California. He was a key and trusted member of my team until I departed in 2003. We have remained in touch professionally and personally ever since, which tells you something about my belief in him as a scientist and human being.
I experienced him to be a deeply knowledgeable, highly creative, and thoughtful physicist and systems thinker who brought out the best in those around him. He does this with his Socratic and humble approach to learning and collaborating. His mind is constantly connecting the dots and he has the unique ability to break down this thinking into descriptions, metaphors, explanations, and narratives that serve to communicate his thinking to others. This is one reason I think he will be a brilliant tutor — he loves physics and loves explaining how it works to others. He derives great joy and motivation from seeing the light bulb turn on in those he is interfacing with.
Dr. Kristjansson is also an excellent listener, and one who not only accepts alternative views, but welcomes and seeks those views to deepen the conversation. This personal toolbox of skills he has built is what enabled him to be the ‘go to’ colleague for idea sharing, it is what enabled him to raise the productivity and creative levels of those on our team, and it is what has allowed him to build deep and trusted relationships across his career. He was a driver of so many creative solutions to our many technical problems and was able to contribute to challenges across the technical stack, from atomic level to materials to processing to device physics, systems and testing. Even packaging. He knows how things work, and when he doesn’t, he dives into learning until he figures it out.
I would like to also speak to the man I have come to know. He is honest, forthright, courageous, compassionate and has a deep desire to contribute to those around him. He is not the kind of physicist who prefers solace and a quiet corner, but rather, he feeds off building relationships and contributing to the lives around him. This is what I believe will allow him to foster excellent and inspiring relationships with his students. He is a shining light, plain and simple. And the sort of person I am always cheering for in the world.
In conclusion, I energetically support Dr. Kristjansson as the tutor you are looking for, and I encourage you to get to know him and see if you can connect with the same man and physicist I know very well.
He will be an inspiring, hardworking, and creative teacher and friend.
